How It Works

This calculator uses the LeBeau method, which recognizes that cats mature rapidly in their first two years and then age more gradually. A 1-year-old cat is roughly 15 in human years, a 2-year-old is 24, and each year after that adds about 4 human years until age 14, then 2 human years per calendar year after that.

Example Problem

How old is a 5-year-old cat in human years?

  1. First year: 15 human years
  2. Second year: +9 = 24 human years
  3. Years 3 through 5: 3 × 4 = 12 additional human years
  4. Total: 24 + 12 = 36 human years

Frequently Asked Questions

How old is a 1 year old cat in human years?

A 1-year-old cat is approximately 15 in human years. Cats reach sexual maturity and near-adult size within their first year, which is why the aging rate is so high early on.

Is the 7 year rule accurate for cats?

No. The old “multiply by 7” rule is too simple. Cats age much faster in their first two years and then slow down. A 2-year-old cat equals about 24 human years, not 14.

How long do indoor cats live on average?

Indoor cats typically live 12–18 years, with some reaching their early 20s. Outdoor cats average closer to 5–10 years due to traffic, predators, and disease exposure.

At what age is a cat considered senior?

Most veterinarians consider cats senior at age 11 (about 60 in human years) and geriatric at 15 (about 76 human years). Senior cats benefit from more frequent vet checkups.
